Educators implement effective planning, instruction, assessment, and reporting practices to create respectful, inclusive environments for student learning and development.
A teacher’s career does not just mean educating students and encouraging them to reach their full potential. Teaching requires day planning, having a plan for the year, assessing the students on what they have learned, and so much more. Standard 5 of the Professional Standard of BC Educators defines what an educator must do for their students.
As an Education Assistant, I never truly understood how much work teachers put into their day. I understood that they taught the students and planned their day, but I did not know that at the beginning of the school year, teachers also have the job of ensuring the students are ready to learn, that they are fairly assessed and ensure that all the students feel welcome in the environment they are in.

As a future educator, I hope to follow this standard to the best of my ability. The process of assessment is still an incredibly difficult concept for me to understand. However, as I develop my understanding, it is becoming clear to me how important it is for students and their development of learning.
As I go through my journey, my plans are to develop my understanding of assessment for the benefit of my students. I hope to create an inclusive classroom in that all my students will feel welcomed and appreciated. Standard 5 is one of the most important standards as it was created for the benefit of the students, and in every classroom that I have been in, it is clear that the standard is practiced on a daily basis. As a future educator, I hope to incorporate this standard to the best of my ability in my classroom and will appreciate any criteria that is given to me in order to support my students.
