Educators value the involvement and support of parents, guardians, families, and communities in schools.

As educators, we understand the saying, “It takes a village.” The students in our classrooms require more than just the teacher to contribute to their learning. Parents and the community are needed to give the students a well-rounded education. Educators encourage the involvement and support of parents, guardians, families, and communities in schools because we value the students as a whole, and part of that whole is understanding the communities and families they come from.

Family and community are a big part of a student’s learning. How their day goes at home or when they don’t have school impacts how the students act at school. Educators value the support of the families and communities because it often allows them to plan field trips or fun activities. After all, families can volunteer to chaperone, etc. Not only does family support help when there are trips, but it also helps the students get comfortable being in a community setting. The parents and people of the community are great role models for the students.

This standard enhances the importance of family and community involvement in a student’s learning. During most of my practicums, I noticed that this standard was practiced almost every day in classes. Teachers are in constant communication with parents, whether it be through email, student planners, or a classroom website that allows the parents to be a part of their child’s learning.

When I get my own classroom, I am going to work toward maintaining an open communication with parents. I will try to bring the students out into the community so that they can learn how to be real contributors to the community.
